European roulette · Single zero
Roulette bets range from a single number to groups of eighteen. The chip’s position determines which outcomes win; the payout ratio determines the profit on a winning stake.

01 / Position determines coverage
A fair European wheel has 37 equally likely outcomes: 1–36 and zero. Inside bets cover individual numbers or small groups. Outside bets cover larger groups, such as Red or a dozen. More covered numbers win more often, but each win pays less.
Both bets have the same 2.70% house edge under standard single-zero rules: an expected loss of about 2.70 units per 100 units wagered. Actual results vary. Covering more numbers increases the chance of a single win, without improving that average return.

Inside bets
A chip inside a cell covers one number. A chip on a shared border or intersection covers the adjoining numbers. A street covers one group of three consecutive numbers: 1–3, 4–6 and so on. A six line covers two neighbouring streets.

A split can join cells side by side, such as 17 and 20, or one above the other, such as 16 and 17. A corner must cover the four cells that meet at a single intersection.
04 / Outside bets
Place the chip in the labelled box outside the numbered cells. These bets cover either 18 or 12 outcomes. Zero belongs to none of them.

Red and Black each cover 18 numbers. Odd and Even cover the odd or even numbers from 1 to 36. Low covers 1–18; High covers 19–36.
Each wins on 18/37 outcomes, approximately 48.65%. A winning 5-unit bet returns 10 units: the 5-unit stake and 5 units of profit.
Select Black on the layoutDozens cover 1–12, 13–24 or 25–36. Column bets cover every third number: 1, 4, 7…34; 2, 5, 8…35; or 3, 6, 9…36.
Each wins on 12/37 outcomes, approximately 32.43%. A winning 5-unit bet returns 15 units: the stake and 10 units of profit.

The payout ratio states the net winnings on a successful bet. The total return includes those winnings and the original winning stake.

A losing 5-unit bet returns zero and has a net result of −5 units under standard rules. La Partage changes that settlement for eligible even-money bets when zero lands.
06 / Single-zero reference
Winning probability is the number of covered outcomes divided by 37. Net payouts exclude the original stake. A winning 1-unit bet returns the net winnings plus that 1-unit stake.

Net payout is profit. Total returned includes the original winning stake. All ordinary European bets have a 2.70% house edge.
07 / Zero & exceptions
Zero is neither red nor black and is excluded from all ordinary outside bets. Red/Black, Odd/Even, Low/High, dozens and columns lose when zero lands under standard European rules. A straight-up bet on zero wins at 35:1.

Net result −10
La Partage returns half the stake on eligible even-money bets when zero lands: 5 of these 10 units. It applies only at tables offering the rule; inside bets, dozens and columns are excluded.
Where offered, a trio covers 0/1/2 or 0/2/3 at 11:1. The chip sits at their common junction with zero. First Four covers 0/1/2/3 at 8:1, from the outer corner of zero and the first street.
Availability depends on the table. These single-zero combinations are separate from the American five-number bet.
Explore the zero positionsEn Prison holds an eligible even-money stake after zero. If a subsequent spin wins the held bet, the original stake is returned without profit. A nonzero losing result forfeits the stake. The treatment of another zero depends on the table’s rules.
Compare the roulette variantsOn appropriate double-zero layouts, 0, 00, 1, 2 and 3 form a five-number bet paying 6:1. Its chance is 5/38, approximately 13.16%.
A winning 1-unit bet returns 7 units. Its house edge is 7.89%, above the 5.26% of ordinary American bets. It is not a European First Four wager.
08 / Putting the numbers together
Red wins.
The bet on 17 loses.
Both Red bets win and return twice their stake. The larger losing bet on 17 turns the second combination into a net loss.
If black 20 landed instead, both bets in the first combination would lose: −6 units net.
Standard European payouts follow 36 ÷ covered numbers − 1. Their theoretical return is 36/37 of the stake, or 97.30%, leaving a 1/37 house edge of approximately 2.70%.
Combining standard European wagers changes the pattern of wins and losses. Each staked unit still has the same 1/37 expected loss. Ten units wagered have an expected loss of approximately 0.27 units; a particular spin can finish well above or below that average.
A straight-up bet has 1 winning pocket and 36 losing pockets, so its winning probability is 1/37 and the odds against winning are 36:1. It pays 35:1 in net profit. Payout odds state the profit for each unit staked; winning probability is the share of outcomes that win.
The usual inside and outside bets pay the same ratios in European and American roulette. Adding 00 makes 38 pockets: a straight-up win becomes 1/38, about 2.63%, rather than 1/37.
Standard American bets have a 5.26% house edge; the five-number bet is an exception with a higher edge.
